Generally, no, a helmet is not legally required when riding an e-bike if your over 16 years old.
Helmets are required on any bicycle, e-bike or not, when the rider is 16 years old or younger. The helmet must have a strap and be properly fitted. While a helmet is not required for those operating e-bikes older than the age of 16, they are strongly recommended. Wearing a helmet is the easiest way to prevent a head injury if you’re involved in an e-bike accident.
E-bikes are treated the same way as a bicycle for this purpose. A person who does not wear a helmet can be noncriminally cited and issued a fine for violating this requirement. Following a citation, a person can show proof that he purchased a helmet to dismiss the charge, as long as the helmet complies with the requirements.
A new bill passed in the Florida House that takes effect on July 1, 2026, and will create a committee to assess e-bike accidents and make safety recommendations on that data, including helmet usage.
